The peanut also known as the groundnut, or monkey nut is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. It is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics, being important to both small and large commercial producers. Peanuts grow underground, as opposed to nuts like walnuts, almonds, etc. that grow on trees.
Tanzania’s peanuts are among the most largely grown crops in the country. Peanut seeds (kernels) grow into green-leafed plants about 18 inches tall. Unlike most plants, the peanut plant flowers above the ground, but fruits below the ground. Yellow flowers appear about 40 days after planting. When the flowers pollinate, the petals fall off as the peanut plant begins to form. The peanut rises out horizontal to the soil surface and begins to mature, taking the form of a peanut. We harvest Tanzania’s peanuts when they have attained 03 months after planting for the steaming types. For the roasting varieties, we wait until the 04 and half months or a month after that to start the harvest. Our trained workers carefully take out the soil around the plants with dried leaves at this stage. After the peanuts have dried sufficiently, they are threshed, removing the peanut pods from the rest of the bush. They shake off the entire pulled-out plant and take it to the drying area immediately.
The processing of Tanzania’s peanuts includes roasting into a nutty brown color that gives a crunchy bite. Peanuts have a strong nutritional profile. Peanuts come in many forms, including roasted, salted, chocolate-coated, and as peanut butter. Most peanuts grown in the world are used for oil production, peanut butter, confections, roasted peanuts, and snack products. Different types have different nutritional profiles.
